Featured Project: Physicians Centre Hospital, Bryan, Texas

Custom-fabricated flashings for parapets and other rooftop transitions helped ensure a quick and non-disruptive installation.

The completed Physicians Centre roof installation.

In 1999, UNITED Roofing & Sheetmetal installed a Duro-Last roofing system on the brand-new Physicians Centre in Bryan, Texas – one of the premier health care facilities in the state. The roof was still performing well until 2018, when a major hailstorm came through the area and caused severe damage to the roof as well as other buildings in the area. It was beyond repair, and the hospital’s executive team decided to have the roof replaced.

According to its mission statement, “the Physicians Centre Hospital exists to provide professional, efficiently delivered, high quality healthcare services to residents of the greater Brazos Valley,” and its vision statement says that “the patient comes first.” These ideals make it imperative that the vendors and products they choose to use in the facility be of the highest standards and can reinforce the hospital’s commitment to the community.

UNITED’s experience with roofing this and other hospitals in the region give us a thorough understanding of the factors that go into roofing a health care facility with minimal impact on day-to-day operations.

“We received other bids for the project,” said Kori Rich, Physician’s Center Chief Executive Officer. “But we chose UNITED, not only because of their outstanding reputation of forty-plus years in the roofing industry, but also because of the excellent work they did with us originally.”

UNITED then installed another Duro-Last commercial roofing system on the Physicians Center. The Duro-Last roofing system was an excellent choice for Physicians Centre for several reasons:

  • Hospitals must maintain a disturbance-free and patient-friendly environment. Duro-Last roofs are installed without disrupting building operations. Installation is quiet, fast, and safe, without the loud machinery, hazardous materials, noxious fumes, hot tar, or mess that can be characteristic of other systems.

  • Before being installed by UNITED, the Physicians Center’s roof was factory prefabricated by Duro-Last to fit the building’s dimensions precisely – including the uniquely shaped sections of the hospital’s rooftop. Custom-fabricated stacks and curb flashings eliminate most rooftop labor from the most critical roof areas – transitions and changes of plane – to ensure a high-quality installation.

  • The new Duro-Last roof installed by UNITED will provide years of watertight protection for the hospital. Important for any facility, this feature is especially critical for healthcare facilities, that contain expensive medical equipment and must also prevent the intrusion of mold, which is costly to eradicate and can put sensitive and fragile patients at risk.

The hailstorm caused significant damage to the entire roof surface, so UNITED needed to remove the old roof down to the deck, including the insulation, metal edging and other components. The new installation included the prefabricated Duro-Last roofing system as well new polyiso insulation and metal edge details. UNITED assigned two crews to the job to ensure that the roof would be installed quickly, minimizing the impact on patients and staff. Upon completion, the job was inspected by a Duro-Last Quality Assurance Technical Representative and given a rating of “Outstanding” – the highest rating awarded by Duro-Last. The installation is backed by a 20-year No Dollar Limit (NDL) labor and material warranty.

“Our priority at Physicians Centre is that patients come first,” concluded CEO Kori Rich. “Because of the excellent work UNITED did with us previously, we knew they would be sensitive to that need, and they installed a new Duro-Last roofing system without disrupting our day-to-day hospital operations. We would highly recommend UNITED to any commercial facility requiring a new roof.”
